Comtech EF Data and Intelsat Offer Ways to Increase Satellite Efficiency

TEMPE, Arizona, February 21, 2008 – Comtech EF Data Corporation announced today that Intelsat, the leading provider of commercial satellite services, will use Comtech EF Data’s award-winning DoubleTalk®Carrier-in-Carrier® technology and compression in its service targeted to wireless operators, known as RevLinx.

RevLinx leverages Comtech EF Data’s DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier technology and compression from Memotec, a subsidiary of Comtech EF Data, to offer the most efficient satellite capacity in the industry. Carrier-in-Carrier® is based on Applied Signal Technology’s DoubleTalk® bandwidth compression technology. DoubleTalk uses "Adaptive Cancellation," a patented technology that allows the transmit and receive carriers of a full-duplex satellite link to be transmitted in the same transponder space. DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier is complementary to all advances in modem technology, including advanced forward error correction and modulation techniques. As these technologies approach theoretical limits of power and bandwidth efficiencies, DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier utilizes advanced signal processing techniques to provide a new dimension in bandwidth efficiency.

DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier allows satellite users to achieve spectral efficiencies (Mbps/MHz ratio) that cannot be achieved with traditional links. Ideal for regions where satellite capacity is constrained, DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier can be used to save transponder bandwidth and/or transponder power thereby allowing successful deployment in bandwidth-limited and power-limited environments.

For mobile telephony applications, RevLinx further reduces the amount of capacity required by leveraging Memotec’s optimization and compression technology. Memotec’s new flagship product, the CX-U Series, combines 2G/3G mobile network access optimization and DCME voice compression features together into one compact, carrier-grade unit. It enables operators to reduce network operating expenses by cutting transmission costs and extending the service capabilities for evolving networks.

"Intelsat has prioritized adopting technology, such as Comtech’s DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier, that enhances the efficient use of our valuable capacity for our customers," said Jay Yass, Intelsat’s vice president, network services.
